Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE)
Independent evaluations that inform IEPs, 504 plans, and school-based supports.
Working together with families and schools to support every child’s success.
Sometimes, as a parent, you can sense that your child’s school isn’t fully seeing the whole picture—whether it’s learning differences, attention challenges, behavior concerns, or emotional needs. When a school-based evaluation doesn’t feel complete or doesn’t match what you’re seeing at home, you have the right to request an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE).
We take time to understand your child’s strengths, challenges, learning style, emotional needs, and the support they may need both in and out of school.
You May Be Wondering
-
An IEE is a private, third-party evaluation funded by your child’s school district when you—the parent—disagree with the results of the school’s evaluation or believe additional information is needed.
It offers a deeper, more individualized look at your child’s learning, behavior, and emotional well-being. -
Our IEEs are very similar to our comprehensive neurodevelopmental and psychoeducational assessments. The biggest difference is simply the process: they’re initiated through the public school district and require a district contract before we begin. But for you and your child, the experience, care, and attention remain exactly the same.
-
Parents often seek an IEE when:
The school evaluation felt rushed or incomplete
Your child’s strengths and day-to-day struggles weren’t fully captured
ADHD, autism, learning differences, or emotional challenges are suspected
Your child isn’t qualifying for school services, but you feel they should
You want a clearer plan for how to support your child—both at home and at school
You want a more holistic, personalized assessment than what schools typically provide
-
IEEs often open doors, create clarity, and help schools better understand and support your child. Families use our IEEs to:
Request or revise an IEP or 504 Plan
Advocate for appropriate school accommodations or services
Understand learning differences or emotional needs more clearly
Build a long-term support plan across home, school, and mental health settings
Create consistency between teachers, parents, and providers
Make informed decisions about tutoring, therapies, or academic transitions
While your child’s school must officially approve the IEE, we work hard to make everything on your end feel as simple and stress-free as possible. We take the lead on coordination so you can focus on your child—not the paperwork.
How Are Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE) Performed?
-
An IEE begins when you request it from your child’s school district and they agree to move forward. Once approved, the district sends us a contract or work order so we can begin the process.
-
Once the contract is in place, we meet with you (and your child, when appropriate) to talk through your concerns, your child’s history, and any questions you want the evaluation to answer.
This is a relaxed conversation—not a test—and it helps us understand your child as a whole person.
-
Your child will complete a variety of learning, thinking, and problem-solving activities across two separate sessions. Most kids are with us for about 5–7 hours total, but we move at a pace that feels comfortable for them. Our priority is always their wellbeing—we take breaks, check in often, and create an atmosphere where they can relax and do their best.
If you’d like support getting your child ready for testing, we can talk you through simple preparation tips, or you can read our recommendations here.
As part of the evaluation, we also gather input from the adults who know your child best. We’ll provide any relevant questionnaires for caregivers and teachers so we can understand your child’s strengths and challenges from multiple perspectives.
-
After your child’s IEE is complete, we carefully review everything we’ve gathered—their assessment results, school records (such as IEPs, 504 plans, teacher feedback, and grade reports), any counseling notes, and relevant medical information.
We take the time to look at the full picture, not just the scores, so we can provide a clear, thoughtful understanding of your child’s learning profile.
-
About four weeks after your child’s evaluation sessions, we’ll meet with you for a feedback appointment to review findings, diagnoses, and any recommendations. Within 48 hours, you’ll receive a detailed written report that you can share with the school. For older children and teens, we may also schedule a brief individual session to review results and answer their questions.
We can help you feel confident using the evaluation at school—whether that means preparing for an IEP, 504, or eligibility meeting, or even attending the meeting with you so you have support advocating for your child.
